First Attempt at Illustrator

After a bit of research i found some tutorials that were a beginners level. So i decided to have a go at producing something similar, with my own twist. The image here is from this website that i stumbled across after using pinterest to inspire myself! http://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/quick-tip-how-to-create-a-traditional-wreath-in-adobe-illustrator–vector-17602

I followed the tutorial fairly closely, but it really helped me get to grips with the shape tools. The leaf shapes began as ellipses and then i used the anchor point tool to give them a point at each end. I created one side of the branch first and then used the reflection tool which made life a lot easier!

The next step was to get the branch at an angle. After following the instruction closely i still could manage it and below are a few of the outcomes i had. It got a bit stressful here but i seem to learn better when i make a series of mistakes. I managed to eventually overcome the problem and now i know exactly what i was doing wrong.

After grouping all the different elements of the image i finally managed to get to where i was supposed to be. I don’t think i’ve ever been so happy, i’ve definitely realised that i learn best through trial and error, as opposed to being told exactly how to do it and having someone just come and change what it is you’ve done wrong.

Although my final image from this first attempt wasn’t exactly as i’d hoped it looks alright, and i am determined to do this process again and make something much better.
