Nickolay Lamm’s project ‘normal Barbie’ explores the idea of the perceptions of beauty in modern society. Statistics showed that if barbie was realistic she would be unable to fuction as a normal human being does. Barbie is such a huge part of many children’s childhoods, i personally as a child had barbies but never considered how unrealistic she is. There’s a huge problem in society at the moment with young girls feeling they are ‘inadequate’ and not beautiful due to commercial images. Statistics from a study by Kings College found that the number of people diagnosed with eating disorders has increased by 15 per cent since 2000. It could be that these two things are linked. Of course, this statistic probably includes both males and females, however the principle is still the same. Speaking about his latest work, Nickolay Lamm said: ‘My last Barbie project got a lot of criticism because Barbie is just a toy.’People argue that a toy can’t do any harm. However, if we criticise skinny models, we should at least be open to the possibility that Barbie may negatively influence young girls as well.’ [http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2353420/Artist-Nikolay-Lamm-shown-Barbie-look-like-measurements-normal-19-year-old-woman.html#ixzz2sYUTOa7X] This is a great example of social activism in the art world, it’s unlikely that Barbie will ever be changed from what she is now, but making people aware of the fact she is not realistic is really powerful, and may highlight the importance of being yourself, it is okay not too look like Barbie!
